The reasons why alcohol addicts have trouble getting a handle on their addiction differ from person to person. However, there are 5 reasons that stick out especially. They include the consumption of alcohol becoming an ingrained habit, emotional and physical dependence, denial that there is a problem and failing to find the right approach to beating the addiction. It may take some individuals several tries before they find the right treatment.

Habit: Alcoholism can become habitual. Individuals may resort to consuming alcohol simply because they are used to doing it. They may automatically reach for a drink after work and at social events. Millions of other individuals may engage in this same behavior, the only difference is that alcoholics drink way too much and aren’t able to control their drinking. Changing ones’ daily activities so that it excludes drinking alcohol is a good way to stop making drinking a habit.

Emotionally Dependency: Some individuals began using alcohol to boost their confidence or to mask insecurity and later became addicted to it. If these issues aren’t dealt with, it will very difficult for an alcoholic to kick their addiction.

Physical Dependence: There is physical component to alcoholism. It will take a while before alcohol leaves one’s system. While this is a very real part of the addiction, it may be the least hard to overcome. Typically, the emotional and mental barriers are much harder for addicts to conquer.

Denying There Is A Problem: Some alcoholics can not stop drinking because they refuse to admit that they have a problem. Some individuals may know deep inside that they have a problem but fear that admitting it and getting help makes it “real,” which can be extremely embarrassing and would require that they do something about it.

Haven’t Found the Right Approach: The method that may help one individual give up alcohol, may not work for another person. It may take some time and experimentation before an individual finds what works for them, but this is important part of the process.

Alcoholism is a devastating disease. It can cause major problems in a person’s life and negatively affect their health. However, many people, although realizing the harm that alcohol does, can not stop drinking. While the individual reasons differ, 5 of the primary ones include the person has not found the right approach, they are in denial, they have a physical dependence, drinking has become a harmful habit and an emotional dependency has developed.
